Gene Colan

Gene Colan was born September 1st, 1926 in Bronx, NYC. He graduated from the George Washington High School for the gifted and attended the Art Students League of New York. During World War II, Colan served in the Army Air Corps in the Philippines, where his work graced the Manila Times. When he returned to the U.S. in 1944, he began work at Fiction House drawing Wings Comics. Stan Lee at Timely/Atlas then hired Colan, and he worked on titles such as Menace, Mystic and Journey Into Mystery. Considered one of the pioneering forefathers of the Marvel Age, Colan was a driving force behind the 1960s Marvel renaissance, drawing early stories of characters such as Silver Surfer, Iron Man, Sub-Mariner and Dr. Strange. He is most celebrated for his long runs on Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula, and Howard the Duck. In the 1980s, Gene worked on series such as Night Force and Nathaniel Dusk. Most recently, he has drawn Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Kavalier and Clay for Dark Horse.
